Study Tips?

This past week has been so stressful for me... I'm so glad I'm finally done with my midterms! But unfortunately, the stress isn't over yet. I have a pretty big test I need to study for during this week for my PreCalc class. I'm kind of nervous about it, but hopefully I'll be less nervous by the end of the week after my 4 day cramming spree. Speaking of studying, I've been struggling a bit with how to study for math. I usually go over the recorded lectures for the section and stop the video as I do the examples along with the videos, but I don't think it's doing enough. Any study tips??

  1. It's been a while since I took a math class. I would say your first step of reviewing the materials again is an excellent start. If able, maybe team up with another student to quiz and practice the concepts with. Good luck on your big math test :-)

  2. As somebody who actually has a math degree, my advice is basically this:

    Do problems.

I honestly believe you gain way more by working problems over and over again, rather than watching lectures and the like, because that's what you're actually being tested on: the ability to do the problems.

There's a Schaum's Pre-Calc outline that you can get on Amazon for less than a dollar, that has over 2,000 problems worked out **entirely**. It's super useful.

I would just buy that, and work one after another after another when I had time, up until test day. You may not remember everything, but you can *do* everything, if that makes sense.

And that's what they grade on.

  4. Just stay confident. When I get nervous it clouds up my mind making it harder to recall information and I start swearing to myself. Just remind yourself you studied hard and that you're guaranteed to pass.

  5. I regret not taking PreCalc because I went from Algbra II to Business Calculus and it wasn't that hard, but I think PreCalc would have given back hours of studying.

  6. I write notes the old fashion way, pen to paper. That's the easiest way for me to remember everything and to just read the notes every day and kind of quiz yourself.

  7. Practice makes permanent. Just practice problems over and over that has always helped me.

  8. Don't burn yourself out! Work in healthy increments such as 30-45 minutes then take a short 5-10 minute break and repeat. If you cram too much and build your anxiety up, you won't be able to recollect anything you've studied. Study buddies are also a super good recommendation.

  11. Maths is very complex you have to practice, and keep practicing it is better to know it than to work from memory. The more you practice the better it will stick. Test yourself do a few problems don't look at the answers until you are finish. that will give you an idea of your weak areas and you can work more on those.
